Exploring AI and Business Central: Where Curiosity Meets Opportunity

Concept illustration of AI and Business Central

When I started this blog, I wanted it to be more than a place to list technical achievements. My goal is to share what I’ve learned—and what I’m still learning—about the intersection of technology and business. For the first post, it feels natural to focus on something that genuinely excites me right now: the role of Artificial Intelligence in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Why AI and Business Central?

Business Central is about making processes simpler, smarter, and more connected. Whether it’s finance, supply chain, or operations, it gives organisations a unified operational lens. AI is about uncovering patterns, making predictions, and automating decisions. Combine them and you don’t just get more data—you surface actionable insight that can reshape how a business runs.

What’s Already Here

AI in Business Central isn’t theoretical—it’s already here. Today, users benefit from features like:

  • Copilot natural language assistance: ask questions in plain English (or your preferred language) and get instant answers—no need to memorize reports or filters.
  • Late payment prediction: helping finance teams anticipate which invoices might not get paid on time.
  • Cash flow forecasting: projects upcoming inflows and outflows using predictive AI models for better planning.
  • Inventory forecasting: enabling smarter replenishment decisions by analyzing sales patterns.
  • Sales Order Agent (Preview): automates capturing sales orders from customer emails: identifies customers, checks item availability, drafts quotes (PDFs), and queues them for human review and approval before conversion to orders.
  • Payables Agent (Preview): automates vendor invoice intake and processing: monitors designated mailboxes, extracts invoice data via OCR, drafts purchase invoices using prior data and accounting rules, then invites human review before final posting.

These are practical, everyday examples of AI making Business Central more efficient and empowering users to focus on higher-value work.

What Could Be Next?

That’s just the beginning. Stretch the horizon a bit and the possibilities grow quickly:

  • Proactive guidance: BC prompting you when a sales order looks unusual or a supplier’s lead times are slipping.
  • Conversational interfaces: where users could “chat” with Business Central to create journal entries, check customer balances, or build reports.
  • Personalized dashboards: AI that learns what each role actually cares about and adapts over time.
  • Deeper integration with external data: using AI to blend BC data with market, weather, or economic data to improve forecasting accuracy.
  • AI-driven simulations: model “what-if” scenarios—demand spikes, supplier disruption, pricing shifts—and see projected impacts.
  • Business health insights: a dynamic composite score blending financial, operational, and external signals to flag risks or opportunities early.
  • Fraud detection: anomaly and behavioral analysis continuously monitoring for suspicious transactions, duplicate payments, or unusual activity.

The Human Side

AI isn’t about replacing people—it’s about amplifying them. Users in finance, supply chain, or sales shouldn’t need to become data scientists. AI should surface insights in natural language, right where they work, so decisions become faster and more confident.

Looking Ahead

AI and Business Central aren’t just buzzwords—together they’re an opportunity to rethink day‑to‑day operations. I don’t claim to have all the answers (that’s why I’m writing), but exploring this space will surface what’s truly valuable versus hype.

So this is the beginning. If you’re curious about AI, Business Central, or where the two meet, stick around. I’ll share what I learn—and I’d love to hear your experiences and questions too.
